The trench warfare evolved from the West of Europe, after the Battle of Marne. The Battle of Marne was the accomplishment of the French and British stopping Germany, who tried to advance on France.
In the west, trenches were formed by digging into the ground to form a wall. Around the wall, there was barbed wire surrounding the trenches to protect the soldiers. The trenches stretched from the North Sea to Switzerland. The army would set up machine guns around the trenches so that the situation would be difficult for an opponent to go around. The invention of poison gas failed to succeed in an attack. The British was the first to use the tank as an offense which was more advanced than the machine gun. Attacks were tough on the other hand but always made up for the loss.
The trenches were designed for staying in one place than mobilization. This did not help much. Over a period of three years, the west did not move anywhere except for maybe a couple of miles in both directions.
