Trenches were originally intended to protect the soldiers from the harm of war. Yet, it seems that the trenches had a more negative effect on the soldiers and the civilians. Many of the trenches were around six or seven feet deep, so when it rained the trenches would fill with water. In the water there would be dead soldiers, rats, and lice. This caused many diseases for the soldiers, which affected the entire community since the diseases would be spread.

Re: Trench Warfare
Good point
I hadn't thought about weather at all
and soil could also play a part in the conditions of the trenches too
because I've always thought France was really swampy

Also, soldiers spread diseases to other soldiers. The corpses of other soldiers probably carried diseases, and since they usually just sat there, they could stink and cause more rats with diseases to devour it.
