In September 1914, the German Schlieffen Plan was stopped by the French and British at the Battle of Marne. Because of the failure of the plan, both sides spent the winter building trenches to protect themselves from the enemy. This type of protection was needed because of the new technologies such as machine guns.

Maybe you should define what trench wars actually were, and what trenches were used for, as well as the drawbacks for having trenches?
