    WWI Trench Warfare
World War I was fought in many ways, but a very useful way that it was fought was through trenches. Trenches were used in the west because it was a great defense strategies, it also helped the west have a better way of fighting with better protection. Trenches were long lines dug into the ground behind barbed wire fences. They were wet, dirty, and had many different diseases that were started because of them. People, soldiers, and the government were all impacted by the trench warfare because it was so huge.
Soldiers were most impacted because they fought from the trenches. In the trenches, there was a lot of water and many rats and bugs running around. The water in the trenches was polluted from the soldiers using it as a bathroom and as a place to throw away their empty shells, etc. The polluted water caused many of the soldiers to have water logged feet and they had to be amputated, this causes the soldiers not to be able to fight as well. The rats and bugs in the trenches also cause problems because they spread diseases to many of the soldiers killing a lot of them. The trenches were very effective but caused many problems in soldiers that were fighting. Many died just from the trenches.
Trenches also impacted people who were not in the war, because many wives lost their husbands, women lost their older sons, and children lost their fathers. People were also impacted by the trenches because of the smells and polluted water that came from it. The trenches were also in many cities were people lived and it caused problems as famines because the soldiers needed food and also that people that were living a ‘normal’ life at the time often lost their lives too. People were not as impacted as soldiers.
Governments were also impacted because laws and treaties were broken so that the war could progress and move on. Allies and enemies were being made every day. Governments could not always uphold what was going on, but tried as hard as possible. In the governments riots and protests broke out because people were not doing what they wanted.
Trenches cause many problems but were effective in the war for the west side of the war. They impacted soldier’s and people’s lives and also many governments. Trenches had many impacts, but in the end they help end the war.

Wouldn't saying that trenches were a great way for defense, and that they caused diseases be contradictary? They were a good defense against guns, but not really anything else. For example, if shells had exploded near a trench, it would cave in as well as hurt the soldier in the trench. Basketball

Trenches protect against more than guns. They provide good defense against the shrapnel that comes from artillery shells. They are also good defense for infantry because it is difficult to enter into an enemy trench without getting hit by a spade, or bayonette (All Quite on the Western Front).

But if trenches actually are meant to protect soldiers from harm, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of trenches. You could argue that if there were not trenches, there would probably be more deaths, but if you think about it, the deaths would be much less painful. Would it hurt more to be shot, or to be slowly eaten by rats in a trench? study
