1. With new technology came the need for new fighting techniques. People had to find new ways to hide from bombs, and heavy artillery, and many found that the best way to do this is by digging trenches and hiding in them. They figured that since bullets were traveling straight this would shield them from there bodies. And now with this protection, men were not getting killed and no progress was made through the war. Men were just sitting in filth and waiting, and waiting, and waiting. Some men would run out to “no man’s land” just to get shot when he to there. This was not always by force. Many men just wanted to end their horrible lives in the trenches. So they just ran out and waited to get shot. With the trench warfare, the war lasted forever, effecting the economy as they had to get more money to fund the, what seemed like, never ending war.
2. Trench warfare brought about many changes in people lives during WWI. It effected the not only the soldiers, but the government and the civilians. The people who most outwardly suffered from the warfare where the soldiers; as these living conditions were horrible. The first, and outermost, thing that a solider would probably notice would be the smell. The smell of dead rotting bodies, the smell of bodies that hadn’t washed in weeks because there were no places to wash, the smell of “bodily fluids,” and the overwhelming smell of poison gas. Another factor of the trenches was the rats. They came in by the millions, feasting on the remains of the dead soldiers. Along with these rats were the lice, that thrived in this unclean environment and could not be gotten rid of. And with these unclean trenches came about a new disease-Trench Foot. This usally resulted in amputation of the foot. Finally, shell shock caused many soldiers to be removed from the front lines as this caused mental breakdowns, tiredness, and lack of concentration. Soldiers were at the brunt of the fist of trench warfare as death was everywhere in the trenches, you could be the next one to be eaten by a rat or suffer the shell bombardment, poison gases, disease or a bullet from a sniper. Although soldiers were at the forefront of the pain of trench warfare, the civilians also suffered from the loss of land. With the advancement of trench warfare many civilians lost land as a result, and most of this land was deemed unusable for quite a while after the war. And with this loss of land food could not be grown and caused a loss of money, people lost houses and had no place to go to. The last thing to suffer was the government. The government was suffering from tremendous amounts of money being lost over a short period of time. They were pouring money into heavier machinery, and trying to advance faster than their opponents.
