world war one evolved into trench warfare because of the schliefen plan. the schliefen plan was created so the war could be won faster and save casualties, but they didnt plan on the french fighting back as hard as they did. after the germans got close enough to paris, the city they were trying to capture, the french went around behind and cut them off from the rout home, resulting in standoffs and then leading to trench warfare.

Trench wars were caused by standoffs...So you mean that the trenches were created in order to protect soldiers? Wouldn't the trenches be doing more damage?

no i ment that the trenches were created to defend the troops in a way and in another to gain ground but that didnt work sooooooooo ya it came out weird but still

the trenches were created to protect the soldiers. war is going to hurt soldiers, and the soldiers were probably better protected in the trenches than they would be standing in front of machine guns.

I agree with Sam, trenches were most efficient in protection of gun firing, but it was unefficient when it came to the soldiers' health.
