World War I became a trench war due to the technology that has been introduced. some of these include poisonous gasses, machine guns, and new battle formations. this lead to the need for cover causing the creation of fallbacks such as pill boxes, sand bags. as well as snipers for finding these with the new telescopic sights for rifles, and trenches. Yes, trenches. trenches provided a new way to hide from the enemy by carefully maneuvering underground. This also lead to many casulties. these trenches were very dirty and caused many diseases that killed the soldiers. Soldiers were effected because they were most destined to die. many were afraid to go into the trenches in fear that they would never come out. Civilian women lost their husbands, Parents lost their children, and soldiers advancing in the wars took over homes as shelter as well as just to gain more leverage. the gov't was effected simply because it was a war. Wars cost money and the gov't has to provide it. also because people were losing loved ones, it is safe to say there were many people who questioned the war, which in turn questioned the gov't. although gov't had to pay for the wars privite corporation producing the weapons used in the war sold them to the gov't who sold to soldiers gaining money for both civilians running the corporations and the government selling to the soldiers. Airplanes also began to appear in World War I. Although to begin with the pilots were simply armed with pistols and their bombs were rocks. This machine of war quickly evolved from rock dropper to major bomber.

How exactly did hiding in a ditch protect from poison gas? Unless the gas moved only in a linear direction, that doesn't seem likely. It seems more likely that the gas was not used because the opposit was true; it was non linear, and therefore couldn't be controlled.
