Life in the trenches was hard on soldiers. Diseases and low rations were common. Soldiers watched others die everyday and sometimes saw others eaten by rats. They also had to wear gas masks for long periods of time which was not pleasant. They suffered through all of this while also worrying about their own lives.
Trench warfare was also hard on civilians. People's family members went off to war and left the family alone and worried for the soldiers' safety. Because of the above effects on soldiers, many family members were worried about their soldier's safety, and because many soldiers died, many families lost members.
Trench warfare was also negative on governments because they had to keep throwing money into the war, and all of Europe was in an economic depression.
