WWI involved into trench warfare for many reasons. For one, fighting in a trench protected the soldiers from the new technology that had just been invented. New technological advances include: automatic rifles, machine guns, and armored cars. The new automatic rifle could shoot 15 rounds in under one minute, and as far as 1,400 meters. The fact that the weapons could now shoot farther than ever before caused the soldiers to fight farther apart. The land in between the two opposing forces was called the "no man's land". Another reason that WWI involved to trench warfare was because the men did not have natural resources to hide behind/use. Therefore, they had to dig into the ground. Here, they could protect themselves from the opposing army.

One should also note that the trenches did not always protect soldiers from harm. Sometimes, bomb shells exploded, caving in trenches, soldiers could have been picked off by guns or snipers, and there were many infestations(rats, frogs, lice, and diseases) that were located in the trenches alongside the soldiers.
